Ahh, the 60s. The Summer of Love. Jam sessions. And right in the middle of it all was the Gibson J-45. From its first introduction in 1942, and continuing today, the Gibson J-45 has been the workhorse of guitar players and songwriters worldwide. Since Gibson first started building musical instruments in 1894, no single model has proved more popular than the J-45!
Gibson set a new benchmark with the now classic "Round Shoulder" body shape. Although many competitors have tried to copy this body shape, nobody else is even in Gibson's zip code! The "Round Shoulder" body is unique in its ability to deliver to the player that true "Gibson" sound, an extremely balanced tone across all 6 strings, yet capable of delivering that "Gibson Roar" and shimmering highs when called upon.
The J-45 recreated for our "Acoustic Icon" series of Gibson guitars captures the sound, feel, and classic appearance of the J-45 of the early to mid 60s. The body of the guitar maintains the classic Gibson shape, and is constructed of solid top grade Honduran mahogany. The top is solid Sitka spruce. The neck is solid, one-piece mahogany, capped off with beautiful Indian rosewood fingerboard. The fingerboard inlays are the simple, period-correct mother of pearl "dots", just as were found on the original J-45s.
Unique features of the J-45s of this period, and found on this guitar, are the heritage cherry sunburst finish color, along with the adjustable saddle on an Indian rosewood bridge. Back in the 60's, the red pigments used in this color were a little unstable…they had a tendency to fade over time. Gibson was able to recapture that gentle fading on the reissue version offered here. The gloss top finish is Nitrocellulose lacquer, of course, just as Gibson used back then, and continues to use today. Nitrocellulose lacquer actually blends into the top cellular layers of wood. It's thin and light, and doesn't restrict the wood movement like polyurethane finishes do on many modern guitars.
The guitar is very comfortable to play, with its traditionally rounded neck shape, 24.75" scale length, and 1.725" wide bone nut. This guitar also features the "Fat 50's" style "tortoise" pickguard so popular on Gibson acoustics of that era. Even the machine heads with the classic "white button" tuners are correct to the time.
