This is a follow up to my earlier reviews in 2002. I've had the Laney or three years now and I've recently come up with an idea that really worked out well for me.
The effects loop on the VC30 is pretty much a wadte of time, you just don't get good sounds with it. So I had my local amp tech take out the Effects Loop pot and replace it with a master volume control using the same knob. It needs a better pot than the effects loop one, and the effects loop needs to be hardwired separately, but it's well worth the AU$77 I paid. The effects loop is still pretty crappy, but it does now operate as a line out which can go into a mixing desk. The big difference is with the clean and drive channels.
Clean hannel:
The clean channel can be cranked up to 10 with the Master Volume/Effects knob set to 2 or 3, which gives a great 'natural' overdrive. Just enough with my Strat Plus for a blues/rock feel with good clear tones when picking and arpeggio-ing and chunky rhythm sounds when pushed. All without damege to your ears or pissing the rest of the band off.
Set the clean channel to 6 or 7, and the master Vol to somewhere simlar and you get a great warm tube tone that goes great with m Ric 12 string and my Gretsch Synchro neck pickup. You need to run the treble pot at 10, with Bass and Middle at 5 or 6 to get good definition at the top end but it's a great sound, and even better with the reverb way up.
Drive channel:
Crank up the drive and channel volume to 10, put the Master Volume on 3 and you've got great ball-busting crunchy overdrive. Pull the Drive and Channel volume back down a few notches and you've got plenty of tone to work with, which I fine tune with a couple of pedals. An EQ to add treble boost (or middle boost with the Rickenbacker) and a Boss SD1 to max the crunch on either clean or dirty. The SD1 gives plenty of sharp edge to both channels. As always, heat eats tone with tube amps. I still stick a 6-inch fan behind the amp - it's a must-have.
I still have a Hotcake in my setup but I'm currently using it just as a boost for soloing. That and a Boss DD3 delay makes up my board.
If your VC30 isn't living up to expectations you might want to try this 'custom' rewire. It shouldn't break the bank and it's made a huge difference to mine. I'm getting a channel switching pedal as a next step. With that great 'clean channel on 10' sound as a rhythm option, and a drive channel with real balls for soloing I may be able to cut down my pedals even more.
alguien me ayuda a aclararme?You can get attenuators/power breaks/whatever built into your amp, but a mastervolume wont give you that cranked tone, itll just push the preamp harder resulting in more saturation, but master volume is limiting the power amp. The cranked tone comes from the power amp being pushed and overdriven, which you loose from turning the master down.
What you described as getting a master volume built in between the amp (After the power amp, (speaker out)) and speaker is exactly what an attenuator is.
